How to use rose bushes as landscaping

How to use rose bushes as landscaping

Landscaping includes designing a space for plants, flowers, and trees in your yard, someone else's yard, or even in front of a business. When you landscape using roses, you will find that the beautiful roses will add a beauty and appeal like nothing else and it will also give you a great sense of pride in a job well done. Landscaping involves planning out the plants, flowers, and trees for a space, whether it is in front of a large corporate building or in someone?s yard. When you begin landscaping rose gardens, you?ll find that the beauty of the roses brings something more to the picture and also gives you a sense of fulfillment in your work.

Dig each hole far enough apart to allow for the best growing environment. If you plant them too close together they will not be able to grow properly. Dig down and check. When you do water, water deeply and thoroly with a wand at the base of the plant.

Rose bushes need to be cut-back every fall in order to produce an abundant amount of fragrant roses in the following season. The amount that they get cut back is always shocking. Rose bushes need plenty of breathing space, so look at your available room and figure how many plants you can handle based on spacing them at least 18″ apart, further if possible. Climbers require even more room at least 12 feet between bushes! Rose bushes need to be cut back, especially if you want lots of big, beautiful flowers. A pair of good quality gardening shears or even a lopping shears can cut those large prickly rose stems cleanly without causing any disease causing breaks. Rose bushes need well drained dirt to flourish. Rose bushes need to be cared for now and should be fertilized monthly if you want flowers on the plant all summer long. Check for insect weekly on the plant especially on the new growth near the top or on flower buds.

Rose bushes need trimming before sap begins to fill the stems. New beds must be dug to make way for the seedlings of my Rose of Sharon bushes. Rose bushes need six or more hours of direct sunlight, preferably where the morning sun is available. Adequate soil drainage is a must, yet the water holding capacity should be high.

Prune off damaged or dead roots. Spread the roots of the rose over the mound and check planting depth. Prune them lower or cut away vegetation around them. Prune the rose bush so that the center is open, this will improve the air circulation. Handouts with more details on rose pruning are available from the UC Cooperative Extension office in Napa.

Leave several inches around the stem of each plant un-mulched. As the mulch decomposes, it will use up the soil nitrogen. Leave three or four strong canes, cut the others back to the main stem, being careful not to bruise the bark at the base of the cane. The remaining strong canes should be cut back, leaving two or three good buds at the base of each. Leaving them on, acts as a signal to the bush that the end of the blooming season has arrived, and the production of hips is to start. You don?t want this to happen until the fall, so remove the dying blooms.
